I don't think the points you're making are incompatible with the idea of a safe space. I think a safe space is necessarily a safe space for some specific group or people or experience or what have you, and it's necessarily an ideal that's not going to be perfected in reality. But that doesn't make it useless or bad, and I think it's good to try to have safe spaces about, in addition to giving people tools to manage experiences. It's not like being kinder and decenter if we can conflicts with teaching people to deal with their shit, you know? False dichotomy sort of thing.

I agree. I think safe spaces are great in theory, and I only bristle when people try to declare that some lare public arena - all of fandom, all of the internet, all of tumblr, this entire university - is or should be a safe space. We can make safe spaces within those arenas, but the whole arenacan never be safe for everyone because even if no one is being a jerk, you're going to have situations like one person needs to get some stuff off their chest but what they say is triggering for someone else.
