SUP

POLL TIME AGAIN

On one hand, I have people asking me to change how the secrets are numbered so they can ctrl+f easier to read through the responses. On the other hand, I have people asking me to keep the numbers how they were -- I don't care either way, so you guys decide.

[Poll #1194742]

IF YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS, PLEASE SHARE

What if you number them 001, 002 etc? Cos if it's just 1, then you'll hit every 1, 10, 11, 12, 21, etc. If it's 01 you'll get times people replied, but 001 would just be that and that alone?

Thenagain, people could just scroll through the same way as the rest of us do.

That was gonna be my suggestion. Start with 001, so then you're doing a Ctrl+F for a three digit code.

I like that the best.

WHAT ABOUT GETTING COMMENTERS TO TITLE PUT "#15" OR WHATEVER? USING THE # OR SOME OTHER SYMBOL?

I LIKE NORMAL NUMBERS BECAUSE I'M AN ASSHOLE!!!

hi

Checking any of those answers makes me feel whiney.

WHY SO CAPSLOCK?

[identity profile] darsynia.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I LOVE THIS IDEA. Seriously, having a secret in the 0's always pissed me off because of find showing up TIME stamps instead. This idea is win.

Quoth the raven, "Nevermore."

I'm good either way. I don't really care. … Well, I suppose I do - don't do the "o" thing again. >.>

I dont understand how either way of changing the numbers will be beneficial? what will adding a 1 do? o_o; *retarded*

Basically it comes down to people being lazy. When it's listed as 08 the person who has the #8 secret can't use ctrl+F to find comments for their secret since it would pick up every comment because the year is 2008.

Personally, I feel the #8 person should just suck it up and hope for better luck next time. I've gotten 8th before and didn't bitch.

If you don't vote ravens you are obviously on the side of the terrorists.

Just keep normal numbers. It's not a problem unless your secret is 08. Since that's the issue you could just skip over #8 (until next year).

Actually, why not just use the number sign before the number? #1, #2, #3, etc That way the numbering system doesn't look weird and it won't pick up the date when you do ctrl+F.

Hardly anyone would do the #1, #2, #3 thing - only half the people did the 01, 02, 03 thing, but the 101, 102, 103 thing affects all the numbers and has got almost everyone to respond to them so. Not 100%, but still pretty high.

IN MY DAY WE HAD TO WALK THREE MILES IN THE SNOW BAREFOOT TO READ THE SECRETS!

RAVENS. "ARE YE READY?" FTW.

I'm thinking too deeply on this matter, but since you asked...

Having the extra "1" is helping but some people are still not using it in their comments. A "0", "o", or "#" won't do any better for the same reason. So,

how about a combination of symbols with numbers?

Instead of using the same prefix (1, 0, o, #, etc.) in front of all secrets, have several different ones. I don't know how others do their Ctrl-F ritual, but I let my left hand be responsible for Ctrl-F and enter (find next) while my right hand stays on the numeric keyboard, the arrow keys, and page up/down. In this configuration, typing "o" or other keys not on the numeric keyboard is a bit inconvenient. Since you don't post over 100 secrets a day and timestamps only affect the numbers 0 to 59, you could divide the secrets into three or more groups. Each group is assigned a different symbol found on the numeric keyboard (+-*/.). Secrets within each group are numbered between 60 and 99. The ID of each secret would consist of a symbol and a number. The numbers can be reused between groups due to the different symbol prefixes. For example, a single secret post may contain up to 120 secrets labelled +60 to +99, -60 to -99, and *60 to *99 and there is still room for expansion if you add /60 to /99 and .60 to .99 to the mix. Commenters will be much less likely to drop digits because the repeated use of the same numbers would confuse themselves. Even if a commenter refuses to use the symbol prefix, it'd still be much easier to look for responses to a specific secret than the current system because the numbers involved in this one evades timestamps. This system makes it highly probable that everyone uses the same ID to identify the same secrets because of the difficulty to communicate otherwise.

WOW I JUST REALIZED THE SIGNIFICANCE OF CTRL+F ON F!S NOW

EITHER WAY MAN AS LONG AS ULTIMATELY RAVENS IS THE ANSWER

(Anonymous) 2008-05-28 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
CTRL-F = lazy, systems to help it = confusing, numbers = fine now

srsly guys, l2scrollbar. it's not like you have to read EVERY COMMENT IN DETAIL OMG.

[identity profile] arwydd.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Doesn't matter much to me, either way - I'll probably still slip up and use the normal (read: SANE) system when replying.

But really - geez people, LAZY MUCH?
