It's pretty cool, but one big thing is that the writing style is a struggle to get through when he's talking about all these foreign concepts about a world you don't know (Unless it's supposed to directly reference the original novels? Never read those).

It's a lovely style but when you don't know the material, it seems pompous and overblown.

I've only read a bit of the original series, but I think he mostly borrows a few names while making up the rest. The animals vs Animals thing is his invention.

I know what you mean about the style. I have a lot of tolerance for it myself, but I know it gets on other people's nerves.
