Triggered by seeing people drink? Seriously?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-04 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's absurd for people who are alcoholics or have had issues with alcoholics in their lives or whatever. Fair enough I'm not going to judge. But, as OP points out, those people probably shouldn't be watching a show where one of the main characters is an alcoholic to start with.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-04 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Well yeah, that's my point. It's one thing to have issues with seeing other people drink, but you don't really get to go out in public and then complain that other people aren't conforming to the standards of behavior you prefer. Ditto TV, which is even more under your control.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-04 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah sorry I thought you were questioning the basic idea that someone could be triggered by alcohol

Check your privilege, arsehole!

Yup. Why are you watching Supernatural if you are triggered by alcohol? Dean is clearly an alcoholic, Bobby probably was too, and there is plenty of drinking on screen.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-04 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Shouldn't this have a trigger warning?

*ducks and covers*

Wait, is apple juice yet another highly specific wank invented by Supernatural fandom?

From the rest of the secret, I gather that someone was of the opinion that the apple juice looked too much like whisky or some other similar looking booze, and was triggered by that resemblance.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-04 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
My friend (who's actually involved in the fandom, as opposed to just watching the TV show) says that "apple juice" is the euphemism that they use for alcohol given to cast members at the Jus In Bello con in Italy. So it probably actually is booze that he's drinking there.

Apparently Jared and Jensen are being "pressured" into accepting alcohol because they're not grown-ass adults capable of deciding on their own whether or not they want a drink.

And this is why I give the fandom a wide berth.

Oh my god. So basically the fandom sees them as babies?

DA

Yep, and some even go into detail and write entire fics based on having other cast members change their diapers. But hey, to each their own.

The SPN fandom is... the scary kind of special.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-05 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
In the con videos he and the other cast members ask for "apple juice" as a euphemism for whisky. And get cranky when the quality is subpar or the serving inadequate.

I don't know when we became a society of teetotalers, but it's perfectly fine to drink in social situations, which a con certainly is. And I speak as someone who actually doesn't drink for personal reasons (headaches) and gets pressured sometimes at parties, etc. But I'd much rather be a society where people get lubed sometimes than be a society of freaking puritans, which seems where we're headed.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-05 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
Also a teetotal and I 100% agree with you on all points. Fuck this puritanism and the whole purity cult going on at the moment.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-05 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
The way some people behave, you'd think if things went their way, we'd be heading for another prohibition AND segregation pretty soon.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-05 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
What the hell? Why would people in Italy, of all places, care if some adults were drinking alcohol?

Wait, hold up. Dean's an alcoholic? I mean...I know he drinks quite a bit, and it's usually to avoid having to deal with a bigger issue...but. Really? I love Dean! I haven't watched since the Darkness ate Chuck. Hmmm :/

It's not like he needs it to function. At least, I don't think so. Huh.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-05 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think he's an alcoholic. I think he tends to self-medicate with alcohol, which is a different thing. (See episodes where he uses whisky instead of pain killers when getting fixed up. Or in order to deal with grief and stress).

If he were an alcoholic, he would be physically incapable of accomplishing what he has.

AYRT

Ok, so it's not just me. Thanks, anon!

(Anonymous) 2017-06-05 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry but, no.

High functioning alcoholics are a thing.

Dean is absolutely an alcoholic.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-05 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
It's not canon but it's a reasonable interpretation albeit one that largely depends on how you define alcoholism

(Anonymous) 2017-06-05 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
He's actually been drinking less lately, if anything.

Post-hell, and during the Leviathan mess, you could make a pretty good case that he was an alcoholic.

To be fair, Jensen got really maudlin and emotional. So I can sort of get where that might be difficult to watch for some people.
