I do this too. To a certain extent, I can allow myself to immerse in the world of the particular fandom and as long as the rules are consistent, I go along with it. But little things like this still bug me.

The one I've been obsessing about right now is language in the Stargate universe. Why couldn't they have come up with some sort of explanation? Doctor Who has the Tardis translating everything. Star Trek has the universal translator. Surely they could have come up with something rather than just shrugging their shoulders and just having everyone on every planet speak English.

I have that issue with Voltron. There are a few semi-plausible explanations you could headcanon, but I wish they had just written something in to make it make more sense.

Yup. It doesn't take that much effort to come up with an explanation, and saying something is better than just ignoring it.

The Gate itself sort of implants language understanding on people that use it. It was one of the special features that wasn't unlocked at first because of the bodge job Earth did to get their gate to work. As they gained more understanding of the system they turned it on as part of their effort to stop having to override stuff and throw up weird error messages all the time. It was the retcon they applied to the series bible from S2 onwards when they realized that having every episode take ten minutes for Daniel to learn a language was really tedious, it just took them until S9 to actually put it onscreen as a very throw away line in the Daniel and Vala wake up in another Galaxy and start another war episode

Wait, that was canon?!?! I always thought it was just something fic writers made up (and I've watched every episode of all the shows)!

It was added into the series bible, but yeah, it was never really explicitly stated properly. I suppose because there was no real way to work it in organically.

I'm happy just to accept it and roll with it.

Did they say that on the show? I don't remember that. Well, they certainly didn't say it early enough or clearly enough for most viewers to catch it.

I do recall them addressing it somewhere. And I think in Atlantis the city itself translated? Or maybe it was that gate as well. Gah, it's been so long. But I definitely remember it being addressed at some point in the series.

Quill's been in space for 20 years. He's probably learned the lingua franca, which everybody else is using, and it's presented as English for the audience so the whole thing doesn't need subtitles.

Was talking about Stargate, not Guardians.

Ah, sorry, misread.

He also has a translator implant - it's in his bio when he gets arrested.
