I don't write self-insert fics, but I'm boggling at the idea that things should be kept private because they don't always get a positive reaction.

If that was the case, I'd have to keep my college major private in my home town (because that's not what respectable young women study), keep my friends hidden somewhere, and not share my opinions about anything, whether irl or online.

I like talking, so I guess I'll keep doing that even if it's not always going to get a positive reaction.

Don't you ever have things that you want to talk about, but when you step back and take a minute you decide, "Maybe I should keep this to myself." or "Maybe I should just tell my small group of friends."

I know I do, and there are times online where I definitely think, "Yeah, I'd rather not have the whole internet see this and deal with the people who would hate it."

Maybe I should have done that on f!s because I really don't care that much what other people do with their fic, I was just questioning it.

The difference is you get to decide what to keep private for yourself. Making suggestions to other people that THEY should keep stuff private just because YOU think it's not fit for public consumption is presumptuous. Treating other people like they're too ignorant to decide for themselves because they've chosen differently than you would is presumptuous.

Just so you know, I've never actually once told another person what to do with their fic. I've never even spoken to people about their self insert.

If someone asked me directly where to post it then I would give them all the options and let them decide for themself.

I was never talking about forcing anyone to do what I think is best, these were all just questions I was posing.

Oh, I get it. You're not going to put a gun to peoples' heads and force them to do things your way, but you think there's nothing wrong with endless questioning of whhhhhhhhhyyy do other people do things differently than you would do them? It's so perplexing! And if they don't see things your way, you offer suggestions because of course, the only reason why they decided Y instead of X is because they're clearly uninformed - unlike you, who fully understands the situation in a way they don't, right?

So you've never questioned why people do things and disagreed with their decisions? Disagreement is presumptuous?

I don't see how I'm doing as much harm as you think I am when this thread is literally the most I've ever discussed about this with other people. I listened to the points posed to me and I understand some of them, I'm going to continue not telling people what to do with their fic. You think I'm doing a lot more in fandom then I actually am, I'm mostly pretty quiet in fandom as a whole.

All the time, but I don't go on and on about it (while simultaneously claiming I'm not bothered lol), nor do I act like it's a huge mystery why someone would do something differently than I would. I'd never suggest to someone that they ought to keep their self insert fic private because *I* don't like it and find it embarrassing. And I definitely wouldn't try to use trolls on the internet as my boogeyman to scare them into keeping their fanfic private!

I also don't act like the only reason why they're not doing exactly what I'd do is because they're uninformed and need my help to enlighten them. All of that sounds horribly pompous and presumptuous. I'm glad you don't lecture people about their fic posting choices to let them know how wrong you think they are, but geez, a little more self awareness of just how patronizing you sound wouldn't be a bad thing.

Yep, this exactly. This isn't a reasonable suggestion, and I'm not sure why ayrt thinks it's good advice.
