Eh, I think the Dawn hate is pretty understandable, it's not just that people found her whiny but more I think the way the show brought her in. Like I wouldn't say I hated her but I probably would have liked her a lot more if she'd been in the show since the start rather than sudden 'Buffy now has a sister because Plot' and then the show acting forever after as if this character had always been there. For me, it felt like the show wasn't willing to do the heavy lifting of having other characters actually get to know Dawn but instead plopped her in with pre-established connections to everyone and then never looked back (like if the season had started with her as always Buffy's sister and then the spell wore off midway through and everyone had to slowly come to care about Dawn because of who she is and not who their manufactured memories say she is that would have endeared her to me much more). Count me as one of the viewers for whom it never worked that Buffy was willing to let everyone die for Dawn's sake, because I couldn't get past how Buffy's big important connection to her was completely fabricated by outside forces.
