Book club - July recs

[personal profile] diet_poison 2017-06-05 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Now taking recs for July!

Rules:

1. Limit 2 per customer
2. Limit 15 total
3. You must list the title and the author
4. You must list a link to the book's page on either Amazon or Goodreads! This is to weed out troll recs and prove that the book a) actually exits and b) is at least reasonable accessible. I will not include books that are $125 a copy, have 12 copies in the entire world, or aren't actually books.

List of books we've read so far:

April 2016: Who Censored Roger Rabbit by Gary K. Wolf
May 2016: Maurice by E. M. Forster
June: Dragon Thief by S. Andrew Swann
July: Para Handy by Neil Munro
August: His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik
September: Graceling by Kristen Cashore
October: Dracula by Bram Stoker
November: Watership Down by Richard Adams
January: Practical Demonkeeping by Christopher Moore
February: It Can’t Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis
March: The Iron Heel by Jack London
April: Night Watch by Terry Pratchett
May: Dragon Wizard by S. Andrew Swann
June (current book): Joust by Mercedes Lackey

Recs will stay open either a) until Friday or b) until we have 15 recs, whichever comes first.

Since there is a campaign for less fantasy fiction, then I nominate Silent Spring by Rachel Carson and Ring of Bright Water by Gavin Maxwell.

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1075635.Ring_of_Bright_Water

No dragons, no YA, no fantasy, no fiction.

Ring of Bright Water is such a beautifully written book

I liked the movie, but apparently it is not that book compliant. It is a beautiful movie though.

The Passenger by Lisa Lutz:
Forty-eight hours after leaving her husband’s body at the base of the stairs, Tanya Dubois cashes in her credit cards, dyes her hair brown, demands a new name from a shadowy voice over the phone, and flees town. It’s not the first time.

Idyll Threats, by Stephanie Gayle. The new chief of police is the last to see a murder victim alive. However, if he tells anyone, he'd have to confess his biggest secret. He's gay.

I would like to nominate Strong Poison by Dorothy Sayers

it's available on the Canadian Project Gutenberg I think so it should be pretty easy for everyone to read it

SA

also, although it's not the first book in the Peter Wimsey series, it's fairly easy to roll with the punches and there's not a lot of outside information you need. It's mostly a mystery novel. The reason I went with this instead of one of the earlier ones is because Harriet Vane is very good. The reason I didn't go for Gaudy Night even though it's better is because Gaudy Night does need a bit more familiarity with the corpus.

Gaudy Night was the first one I read. I'm curious about why you think it requires more knowledge of the series. I'm wondering if there are things I missed that I didn't realize at the time.

DA

It has some callbacks and references to the earlier books, maybe?

Re: Book club - July recs

(Anonymous) 2017-06-06 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
There are callbacks, but mostly the fact that it's the conclusion of the Harriet/Wimsey storyline.

I agree that it's capable of standing on its own, but I felt that Strong Poison would be better for book club. But I'm open to suggestion if you or others feel Gaudy Night would be better! Like, I definitely see the argument - what do people think? Hopefully diet_poison would be amenable if people felt it would be better to do Gaudy Night.

Can you post something about its availability? Is it something only available as an eBook? Do you have a link to that book on the site you listed or another site? Thanks!

The Fifth Season, by NK Jemisin. Dark fantasy, without the usual sword and sorcery trappings of the genre.

Call Me by Your Name by André Aciman
Summer in Italy, first love, sunshine, beaches, heartache, coming of age, obsession, drama, longing, pretty people in pretty places, lusty fruit.

Can we, pretty please with sugar on top, have a non-dragon book for July?
