Well of course they wouldn't do it is Bowie was still alive. He wouldn't have been a sacrifice to Media at that point, would he? She is all the celebs whose lives were a sacrifice to her. I can't wait until she appears as Trump.

I can dig a good segue from the topic at hand to the unrelated point you want to make.

This was not a good segue from the topic at hand to the unrelated point you wanted to make.

Well, Fuller (it is Fuller, right?) did say Media would only be taking the form of dead celebs, so it's a moot point I guess.

I want to know what Iman thinks.

8/10. Would Fuck.

I didn't hate it, but yeah, it was a bit uncanny valley. Not just because Gillian Anderson looked the part, but because she was deliberately mimicking Bowie's voice, accent and manner of speaking as well. I can also understand why they're calling it Ziggy Stardust... it's his most famous persona, after all.

Yeah, hate isn't the right world, really. It just ... really chaps my ass?

The clip I saw also was lifting bits of lyrics wholesale; the one that jumped out at me was "beating up the wrong guy".

(I don't know if there were others because we don't get that channel.)

I understand. I'm a Bowie fan and seeing so many references and homages after his death is bittersweet. This scene had quite a few lyrical references. I didn't like that quite as much and thought it maybe took away from the impact of the scene as a whole, tbh.

Also ... the more I think about it, I think Bowie was the wrong choice "thematically." Is Media supposed to be people who were 'consumed' by their fame? If so, while Judy Garland and Marilyn fit that well, I don't think Bowie does as well, as, say, Elvis. Or Kurt Kobain. Or Michael Jackson, but then portraying Elvis or Michael opens the door to too many other issues.

(So I do understand that aesthetics probably influened the choice of Bowie a lot.)

Media has also been Lucille Ball, so definitely not just people who were consumed by fame. She's not being David Bowie or Lucille Ball or Marilyn Monroe the actual people, she's being an iconic image of them.

Just pop culture icons, I think. e.g. she appears as the classic dream ideal of Marilyn Monroe, and even parrots conspiracy theories. She also talks in the voices of the people she's imitating. It seems she can't appear as 'herself' like, say, Mr World does.

I'm sort of with you. I thought it was hamfisted, and the lyrics just shoehorned in, they didn't flow. Bowie has so many lyrics, they could have done better. And I feel bad for Iman, and even more for Alexandra. Done as an homage they should have put in more effort given how recently he passed away, and I love the show, most of it.

The intention was to have her speaking via Bowie lyrics. My favourite was 'there's a terror of knowing what Mr World is about'.

...You mean an actress was trying to act the part of a pre-established persona and represent them accurately?
Okay...
You must hate biopics.

I agree.

I need to watch this! (But yeah, as a fellow Bowie fan I get your nitpicking. Seems general public can never get things about his career right, lol).

Granted, that exact look (down to the blue suit) was from his "Life on Mars?" video, which album (Hunky Dory) predates pre-Ziggy TRaFoZS, though it's a look he also returned to somewhat for Aladdin Sane and PinUps. And granted, his glam looks were pretty fluid, so I do realize I'm not only nitpicking to a ridiculous degree, but also doing said nit-picks on wobbly ground.

*sigh*

Hunky Dory predates Ziggy Stardust, but the music video wasn't filmed until 1973, smack dab in the middle of the ZS era. So if you wanted to nitpick, you could say that he didn't "return to" the look, it was the look he had at the time. ;)

I think you're being overprotective frankly

I'm following the new Twin Peaks, and honestly, every time they mention Philip Jeffries (which is more than I was expecting!) it's like a punch in the chest because he's not going to be there.

I was not as sold on this as many people, because as a Bowie nut it's just a bit dull to pay homage to that video, again. It was well done though and I thought composing the music so it sounded like TVC15 was a great touch.

The point of Media is that she takes the form of pop culture figures who are worshipped, and it's natural that people would pay more attention to Bowie after his death, and think mostly of very well known images such as this one. It's the Life on Mars video so it was filmed during the Ziggy tour. There isn't really a clear divide between Ziggy and Aladdin Sane, and Ziggy was never truly a set concept - that was really just used to promote the album.

Fuller has always been a big Bowie fan, and wanted to get him involved in Hannibal, so you can be assured he didn't want to be exploitative.
