Never seen that before

[personal profile] el_regrs 2017-06-06 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
What's something you've never seen before today? This week? This month? Or even this year?

Today I saw a tow truck transporting a big yellow school bus.

Then I came home and found two earthworms fucking on the sidewalk.

Some kind of very tiny yellow flying bug that landed on my arm.

Yesterday, I saw some jaywalkers running across a 4-lane road, right in the middle of the street between oncoming traffic when there was a crosswalk literally 20 ft away that they weren't patient enough to use.

One of the cars they ran in front of was a cop who flashed lights and gave them all tickets.

I saw a bird chase down and kill a mouse. But it wasn't a hawk or anything. It was one of those shitty walmart parking lot birds.

I once saw an eagle take a domestic cat. It was so funny, especially because the cat in question was a really prolific songbird killer. It was like nature said "you like trying to fight birds, try this birdie on for size". Did more for getting people to keep their cats indoors than all the coyote warnings have done. Certainly seen more song birds around this last year too.

Yeah, a red tail hawk tried to make off with my friend's chihuahua years ago, holy shit was that scary! We saved the dog but damn we were never the same. The food chain, man, that's some deep shit lol.

Well, that got dark fast. :(

I generally agree, and that's pretty awful... but to be fair it could've been a stray kitten that someone wasn't trying to hit. I once saw a little ball of fluff resting in the road of a 45 mph zone... but when I was only fifty feet away, the ball lifted its head... it was a kitten that was scared stiff. All I could do was drive over it -- I'm sure I would've hit it had I swerved. Fortunately, once I passed, I looked in the rear view mirror and saw it dart safely to the side of the road.

Sorry. :( It happened recently, so it was the first thing that came to mind.

I get what you're saying and sometimes shit happens, but I saw it near a residential area that happens to be poorly lit, so I feel that if people slowed down a little/used their brights at night it could've been avoided. unfortunately, I see a lot of roadkill in that area as well... but the kitten was just more jarring than usual.

Oh no, don't apologize. That's something you can't unsee.

Ugh, few things drive me crazier than idiots who rush in a residential area.

Is the diamond and gold bubble starting to burst? That cannot be good.

Re: Never seen that before

(Anonymous) 2017-06-06 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
If it's a bubble, sooner is better than later for bursting

Re: Never seen that before

(Anonymous) 2017-06-06 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
The gold bubble has been bubbling since about 2006 when the first cracks started showing in the banking industry. Diamonds have been building a bubble since the mid twentieth century, when De Beers started trying to convince everybody that industrial diamonds weren't the same as naturally occurring diamonds and that the latter were still rare.

The generation that still thinks diamonds can only be found in streams in the Congo by a few intrepid adventuring souls is (literally) dying out. We all now know that they can be cranked out by the truckload of industrial machines and even if they aren't they are dug out of hellish mines by borderline slave labor. And they all glitter the same, and are all the same carbon. That artificial diamond scarcity and artificial distinction is long overdue for ending. Trouble is a lot of people have a lot of savings tied up in diamonds, both directly in the rocks themselves and indirectly in the associated industries.

The gold bubble's a bit of an odd one because it feels about the same as the current bubble in the stock market - yeah, in some sense, it's overvalued vis-a-vis fundamentals, but the problem is that there's nowhere else better to put your fucking money because everything is such hot shit.

The diamond thing I don't even know that's probably going to suck.

Invest in weapons industries and security industry suppliers, those are growth industries right now. I think we're probably due a new tech bubble for surveillance tech and counter surveillance tech, but it is hard to get data on that one due to the secretive nature of those developments. I'd buy into GM foods though, the techbros are getting their Randian message on food labeling laws onto the statute books and are working heavily to ridicule people who prefer non-GM. Plus the UK market is about to crack wide open to American GM foods as part of the Trump-Brexit free trade agreement that the English PM will have to sign (she's really got no option) so there are some good short term profits there for the next few years.

I would say there is very few safe physical money dumps though. Avoid rare automobiles though, people are starting to cash out of their investment machines so there are more "classics" coming onto the market. Prices can only go down on those now.

Genetically modified food is mostly safe

Many things are considered mostly safe, doesn't mean I want to eat them. Take it back to the gulch, techbro.

The elderly Akita at my work running and bouncing after a toy. Earlier this week, she rolled over for a belly rub, first time we've ever seen that with her, either.

This was a few years ago, but one of the cards I was given for my 21st birthday was a checklist of things to do in the following year.

One of them was witness a public proposal. As luck would have it, I spent that year's spring break visiting my brother & we went to Disneyland, where he pointed out to me that there was a proposal taking place. So I only saw a bit of it, but that was something I'd never witnessed before.
