Squirrels

(Anonymous) 2017-06-07 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
They are basically the monkeys of the Northern Hemisphere, right? I mean squirrels are, in Europe and North America, occupying the ecological niche monkeys would fill. That is why we have no monkeys in Europe and NA, isn't it? Man, I wish we had monkey species in the UK though. Can't even release some macaques or geladas in this country without the RSPCA and cops kicking up a fuss. Hell, can't even release native species like Pine Martens on Primrose Hill without almost getting arrested. Thank god the Met are still easily bribed.

HA. No. Squirrels are rodents. Basically - rats with big, fluffy tails and squished noses. They're cute, but they're nothing like monkeys.

(I personally don't like monkeys at all, though, so - ymmv.)

Same ecological niche though. Arboreal living, fruit, nut, and tree seed eating in the canopy.

So more like possums really.

There was an epic squirrel fight all day yesterday in my backyard (and several adjacent yards). Don't know what the deal was, mating season or territory disputes or whatever, but my dog loved the shit out of it!
