It's not 100%, but they said they're taking place in an alternate universe. That reads more like the old third versions than sequels.

oh ok, I missed that info. yeah probably not then.

That's actually too bad; the end of SuMo sets up better for a sequel than a lot of other games imo. But the premise for this could still be really interesting.
