Not in a literal sense, but I don't think OP meant to belittle the situation that many racial groups find themselves in. I have a feeling that OP was looking for an example that would be familiar to most people and easily related. Like it or not, those are two examples of unwarranted hate that will elicit a reaction and possibly make people think about their actions. Can you think of a better one that people will readily recognize? I'd love to hear it.

As a person of color, whether the OP didn't mean to belittle the situation means nothing to me. She did belittle it. Someone burning a cross on my lawn or spitting at me or calling me a nigger or following me around a store because they're afraid I'll steal their stuff is not the same as someone finding someone's sexual fetish distasteful.

Furries are not a race. They are also not a sexual orientation. They are a kink. A more appropriate comparison would be to the BDSM community which also gets a lot of flack.

Seriously, anyone who compares furries to a racial minority is just so backwards I don't even have words for it. It's like invoking Godwins.

You know what I find interesting is that one (or two) word(s) on a secret is apparently negating the entire point of the secret. People are getting so tied up in semantics that there's no consideration for a point that might possibly be there. I'm sorry to hear that these things have happened to you. I really am. I apologize for the actions of inconsiderate fuckwads towards you, because dude, that's just not right.

But this secret was about furries and how it's painful to be mocked for a part of who you are. It's not the oppression olympics. It's attempting to bring to light the fact that a group of people -- be it a kink or whatever -- is being mistreated for no good reason.

(Anonymous) 2008-05-28 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
When someone makes a secret, their wording is the only thing people have to go on, so it's no wonder that people will pick on it.

And no one is using this as the oppression olympics. I mean, who has left a comment sayiing that this is a competition? But prejudice against minorities is just so far different from prejudice against sexual kinks that it just bothers me so much that being a furry is being equated to being black or whatever. I mentioned the BDSM community specifically because I am part of it, and while some people think people into that sort of things are freaks and rapists and just weird and mockable it really is not the same as being targeted for being part of a visible minority.

I'm sympathetic to furries. I have a kink, too. But it really isn't the same thing. Apples and oranges, as the old saying goes.

don't waste your time, she won't get it. she never does.

I do think that OP could have worded it better (I know that I've submitted secrets and then wished I could have changed things, but that's giving too much benefit of doubt to an anonymous that I haven't ever spoken to) -- it was insensitive. But when I said I agreed with the secret, I didn't mean to say I agreed with all of the wording. I agreed with the sentiment behind it. I think OP needed to not use such a huge hyperbole -- furries aren't being beaten in the streets or dragged behind trucks.

I just don't understand why it's such a big deal what you do with your sex life. So long as you're not raping or anything sakjgfjak why is it an issue that deserves bashing? The same can be said of gays -- how is it hurting anyone? Bedroom (or even convention) activities are really nobody else's business :\

(Anonymous) 2008-05-28 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I agreed with your last point up until the comparison to homosexuality. Again, completely different ballpark.
karel: (kamui; with nothing to lose)

[personal profile] karel 2008-05-28 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Bedroom activities and attractions? Nobody should be bashed for them? *shrug* Or even in public, but that's a completely different rant.

(Anonymous) 2008-05-28 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
But a kink is not the same thing as a sexual orientation. There is also a large component of furry that has to do with fandom/fic/art. A more appropriate comparison would be saying that furries are, say, like yaoi fangirls. They are part of a fandom, attracted to a certain thing sexually, produce art/fic of that thing, cosplay (fursuit), and are largely mocked by and large by fandom (or the fandom outside of lj, at least). Most are harmless, some are annoying and take it a bit too far.

Sounds more like furry than homosexuality does.

Now that I can take, especially seeing as how I've been called out on that before. Er... thanks, anon, for pointing it out ^^' I feel kinda dumb for not drawing the comparison before, though I think yaoi fangirls might be a bit more accepted, seeing as how at least they're talking about human beings, but it's a valid comparison. I'll keep it in the back of my mind for future reference.

(Anonymous) 2008-05-28 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd really like to thank you for being receptive to new ideas and listening and considering my point of view, especially since I think I worded my responses to you a little harshly (sorry D:) And ignore the stupid anon down there. Some people just have no class.
karel: (yoko; in my dream)

[personal profile] karel 2008-05-28 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for being patient with a silly white girl who... well, I'll admit I'm pretty uninformed (omg college lurnings makes u smrt!), and it's helpful to get different perspectives, especially on issues like this. I probably deserved the harsh -- sometimes I think I'm being helpful and then realize that I've got it all wrong. ^^'

That one and I have a history... Not replying anymore to it, seeing as how I've fed it too much already.

(Anonymous) 2008-05-29 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Don't be hard on yourself. Not everyone knows everything, and hell, I'll be the first to admit that I've got a good deal of ignorance in me. Just keep doing your thing.

(Anonymous) 2008-05-28 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
New anon here and I am both gay and a furry.

And I can say that they are both completely different things on completely different scales, and that other anon (the one who uses caps, not the lower-case troll) has hit it right on the money.

(Anonymous) 2008-05-28 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
good comment
