I've heard some of them say it's the "softness of the fur" that they like. In that case, why is the fetish not for someone wearing a fur coat? Or, even someone who is really hairy, but is still a human?
I've tried to rationalize it myself, it all comes down to them being turned on by animals.

Anthro animals do not equal nonanthro animals; the body structure is very humanlike and, here would be the big thing, they're sentient. The biggest reason beastiality is wrong as hell is because the animal can't relate to you, can't speak to you, can't understand what is happening to it or consent therefore you're raping and damaging it. Not the same here. For fuck's sake, look at any fantasy creature. There have been humans with animal aspects since the freaking Greek and Egyptian myths.
If you're writing anthro characters it's a fetish. It's weird, most fetishes are weird. But I happen to think that most fetishes are pretty ingrained mentally. I don't see why they wouldn't be - it's what you're attracted to. I don't remember ever picking what turned me on, but there it was when the hormones came around. And it doesn't mean you'd want to do the illegal equivalent of any of those things in real life.
And I'm not a furry, for the record. Just irritated and in the mood to make some tl;dr.
