Neat. Too bad she changes whether or not it was self defense during every conversation. Thankfully the evidence backs up the notion that she was a horrible person who took advantage of men's generosity towards her to rob and murder them.

I sleep quite well knowing that she (like other serial killers) can no longer harm innocent people.

I am totally against the death penalty (if you note I said nothing about being glad they are dead). I'd have preferred she got life in prison. I'm actually not sure what this has to do with the argument of whether or not she just killed to rob people.

So it was just a coincidence that her first victim was a convicted rapist?

No. Her first murder may have been self defense. But the rest of them? The evidence (both victim history and physical) says they were murdered in cold blood.

Just because they weren't actually trying to harm her doesn't mean they weren't in her mind.

"I think this anger developed inside her. And she was working as a prostitute. I think she had a lot of awful encounters on the roads. And I think this anger just spilled out from inside her. And finally exploded. Into incredible violence. That was her way of surviving. I think Aileen really believed that she had killed in self-defense. I think someone who's deeply psychotic can't really tell the difference between something that is life threatening and something that is a minor disagreement, that you could say something that she didn't agree with. She would get into a screaming black temper about it. And I think that's what had caused these things to happen. And at the same time, when she wasn't in those extreme moods, there was an incredible humanity to her."

So THAT is why she robbed them and shot some them execution style in the back. Because she felt like she was in danger. Well, that makes it all okay.

I am glad that feeling like you might be in harm is a justifiable reason to kill someone. All those cops who do it will be happy to know.

I don't think anyone is saying that what she did was morally justified

that's a very big jump you're making there

Then what is the person trying to argue? Because you can talk until your blue in the face about how she did all this because she felt unsafe. The actual EVIDENCE says otherwise. So saying anything else is just...nothing concerning. Who cares if she felt unsafe? She still robbed and executed men who by all accounts were just trying to be nice.

As far as I can tell - and I'm not that person - we're talking about whether she's a sympathetic figure.

I don't know on the merits whether you're right or they're right, I'm just saying, anon's not saying she was right to do what she did. They're arguing that it's acceptable to feel sympathy for her.

It is possible to discuss something horrific in hopes of better understanding it, without condoning it. The simple truth is that Aileen Wuornos was once like everyone else, until she crossed a line she couldn't come back from. Maybe understanding why she crossed the line, could give us additional insight and give us a shot at someday pinning down why this person crossed the line, but another person didn't and from there, maybe we will someday be able to provide necessary intervention for someone under some of the same risks. That's why I'm a true crime buff and am fascinated by the villains of history: not because I support what they did, but because I want to understand why they did what they did and in doing so, understand something about the shadow side that runs through myself and everyone else.

Though what I'd heard about Monster is that Aileen's real world girlfriend may have had more awareness of what she was doing and kept quiet because she liked the money Aileen brought in. But I don't know the Aileen Wuornos case inside and out. Any buffs want to help me out?
