I thought the Babadook was a metaphor for grief? Is there another interpretation?

I've seen it interpreted as a metaphor for depression.

Grief alone doesn't make you nearly kill your kid and actually kill your dog.

A psychotic break that, while stemming from grief, is still a mental illness and does.
