I watched a clip of The Cosby Show recently and wow was his character smug in that.

I never liked The Cosby Show in general. It bores me and I hate how every TV Guide or news article talks about it being the best TV show to be progressive when there were other shows that featured an African-American cast that did it way before Cosby and a lot better too. Check out Good Times, 227 and The Jeffersons. They're the much better shows IMO.

Nayrt

I think some of the praise it's gotten is also because its family is firmly upper middle-class, with the parents being a doctor and lawyer, and where the relationships are all fairly stable. As ho-hum or cheesily perfect as that sounds now, I get the impression that was something that just wasn't seen with African-American sitcom characters until then.

As someone who was already an adult when this was first airing, you are correct that it was a cool thing to see and not at all usual.

periodically there would be very young women on the Cosby show who weren't very good actresses, whose characters would be basically written as having no personality and didn't really do much of anything. They even all had a very similar appearance (extremely light skinned Black and thin). in light of what we know know I wonder if these were women he raped and put them on the show to buy their silence.
