"The Story of An Hour" made me realise that of course I would always be single when I first read it at seventeen, and it keeps on reminding me why marriage would disagree with some fundamental part of my personality.

I remember reading that in school. Wish there were more unique reactions like that in stories.

I hope you don't mind my asking, do you identify as aromatic?

I do, but I didn't back then.

I'm not sure what you mean, but I have a certain interest in Lather and Nothing Else, AKA Just Lather, That's All: http://mrquarrie.weebly.com/uploads/1/0/1/0/10102453/just_lather_thats_all.pdf Every translation has a slightly different version of the final line, and I have no idea which is the most accurate to the original Spanish. It makes me wish I knew enough Spanish to compare them to the original.

One of my relatives is one of the example stories in that.

Really? I'm sorry that happened to them.

Yeah, we've never been particularly close (I'm a big ol' queer black sheep), but I know it was absolutely heart wrenching for that side of the family and there is no way it was anything but a horrific mistake.

I can believe it. :( I used to judge, but people make mistakes. Usually mistakes don't end in tragedy - but sometimes they do.

I've read that (well listened to it). Haunting short story.

I remember the time I forgot milk in the car. (I swear I have a point.) I had a lot on my mind, but while I knew the milk HAD to get in the house, I was distracted. And as the article points out, a break in routine throws anyone off. I remembered a few hours later, and positively fled down to the car to get it. The milk was still cold. And then I thought about how easy it was to just... completely forget something important because of a change in normal routine. No, milk isn't a child, but forgetting is forgetting.

Also, in general, I bet more people than are willing to admit have made huge mistakes like these - not exactly this mistake, but ones that similarly could have ended very badly. That's why I really try not to judge too hard.

Yeah, I bet people do it all the time. But because there is no permanent damage, they forget about it.

I read that before. It definitely helped cement my decision to never have kids. I'm already forgetful enough, so if even normal, nonforgetful people can forget their child in the car, I'm certain that I would.

The only thing I don't get is when the baby was supposed to be left with a sitter or daycare. Why didn't the sitter or the daycare call?!

Ted Chiang, "Exhalation" everyone gushes about "The Story of Your Life" but "Exhalation" tops it on the philosophical front.
