Close calls

I may be late in posting this. If I am I'll do another thread tomorrow.

But based on the discussion about leaving kids in cars - what are some close calls you've had, where you didn't realize something, made a mistake, etc. and it could have ended badly?

This wasn't a mistake on my part, but I was being followed once and never noticed. My friend was driving behind me to scare the guy off the whole time. At some point a girl came up to me (this was at school) and started talking while walking with me, which I thought was surprising (since we'd never met) but sweet. Now I wonder if she realized the creepy guy was there, but also knew I didn't notice and didn't want to freak me out, so played along with my oblivion until the guy went away.

It did teach me to be more aware of my surroundings, though.

Last night I went on a long walk in a state park 30 minutes from my home. I was there pretty late in the evening and there were few people around, but at one point a woman behind me tapped me on the shoulder (almost scaring the shit out of me) and asked me if I drove a Toyota. Turns out, I had tucked my keys into the tiny pocket in my yoga pants, and at some point they had fallen out my pocket and this woman spotted them on the trail. I was the first person she had encountered and had asked about them.

This was literally 3 minutes after the park was closed, it was rapidly getting dark in the woods, and there were no employees around. I don't know what I would have done if this woman hadn't found or spotted my keys, or if someone else had claimed them and taken my car.

Wow! Pretty scary. Good thing she found them and was honest!

once when I went to a show with my friend I left the car keys IN THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR THE WHOLE TIME

I still can't believe nobody stole the car

also, I was in high school and it was my mom's car

I left my car running while parked on a busy street, with the lights on and the keys in the ignition, for over an hour when I met a friend for breakfast. The doors were locked. Completely by accident I had a the extra car key with me, but 99% of the time that key chain never leaves the house.

I don't think my friend even realised I was so quick to correct before she got to the car but that would have been embarrassing.

The front dor of my apartment opens onto the street. One night I forgot to lock it and that night it was windy and the door blew open. I woke up to find the door standing wide open, but it was pretty clear it had been the wind and no one had come inside, but they easilly could have.

Then there was the time I left my keys in the front door and didn't realize until the next morning. It would have been hard to see them from the sidewalk due to the screen door, but still.

I once went to a casino restaurant for dinner and came back to the parking lot to find out that when I had locked the car with the key fob remote as I was walking away, I had accdentally popped the trunk, too (it was a rental and I wasn't used to it). The trunk had been open the whole time I was inside. None of the equipment in the trunk was missing (maybe it counts for something that I was in northern Minnesota) and the trunk light hadn't run down the battery, thank goodness.

IDK if this qualifies, but I once parallel parked my car and left it alone for about two hours. I came back to find my car had been rammed into the car in front of it by a hit and run dimwit. I and the owner of the car in front of me had to have both vehicles towed.

To this day, nobody has ever come forward to pay me damages. I have insurance, but it's still a bitch to bother with this stupid crap.
