eh also I tend to of mentally age up a lot of fandom characters - tweens to teens and teens to young adults - not even for reasons of finding them attractive (some I do but not most) but because the characters are usually written in a way that's more mature than their actual age bracket, and often look more mature or if indeterminate age, and my brain just kind of does it tbh

ikr. I'm trying to think of the last time I saw a realistic depiction of a fictional teenager.

I have a hard time writing kids because I don't have a lot of the same experiences other kids had, including in my behavior and my speaking, so even though they reflect *me*, they don't come off as realistic because they aren't general. It's very weird and I wonder if other creators run into the same, leading to your predicament.

Same, I also tend to subconsciously view most young fandom characters as being my age range (twenties)

I was thinking about this earlier - I do this too. When I was a teen, I thought of the protags I was reading about as teens, and now I think of them as young adults. I guess I project to some extent, heh.

Yeah, a lot of my fandoms have characters who are "teenagers" but live independently and have adult jobs, and it would make no difference to the character whatsoever if the age the writers had slapped onto them was something in the 20's or higher.

Really? Hm. I don't know if I'm familiar with fandoms with a lot of totally-independent (human) teenagers. What fandoms? (just curious)

DA - in Yuri!!! on Ice, many characters are under 20 and have extremely successful careers as competitive figure skaters, traveling the world and helping their families through their careers in some instances (at least I'm pretty sure that's part of Yuri P's schtick? And he's only 15).

That's not ~totally independent~ but it's definitely not your average teenager skipping third period to smoke behind the gym.

Uhh in the case on Yuri on Ice, the sport of figure skating is so physically demanding and requires such a low body mass that going on competitively beyond your late 20s-30s is usually a bad idea? Many gymnasts and other Olympic athletes start training in their youth/adolescence because those bodies are considered ideal and don't continue when they become of age. They even mention this issue in the show itself with Victor and Yuri?

Not trying to be rude, but of the examples of shows that have too many young characters when they could substitute older, I'm ??? on choosing this one.
