It wasn't a shitty thing to do. There are some sayings that apply here:

"Don't set yourself on fire to keep someone else warm."

"Put your own oxygen mask on first."

You're not a bad person for looking out for your own mental and emotional well being instead of sacrificing it for someone else. Your friend needed more help than you could ever provide. Even if you'd devoted all your time to her 24/7, it wouldn't have fixed her. You did the right thing.
