Yes. In fact, if they had her name on the sign, and because of it people assumed she was a lawyer, they would be responsible for everything she did and would be subject to disciplinary measures.

I didn't know that about the disciplinary measures! But I did know they would be liable for her actions.

I mean, give her a raise or a juicy title, but adding her to the firm's name is just...no.

LOL. I remember the last time this topic came up on FS and at least one person got mad because they thought that saying it was dodgy for Karen to act like she's a lawyer when she wasn't a lawyer was an insult to secretaries.

Is Karen even a paralegal, though? I thought you needed to pass an exam and be certified for that in the U.S. You can't just do a bunch of research at a law library and call yourself a paralegal.

I googled the requirements for New York out of curiosity:

Under New York’s Rule 5.3, lawyers must provide supervision of all legal paraprofessionals, including instruction in ethics and confidentiality. The professional conduct of paralegals is considered the responsibility of the supervising attorney.

Paralegals in New York state are not required by law to meet any standardized educational or training requirements before entering the profession. However, the Empire State Alliance of Paralegal Associations (ESAPA) articulates in its Position Statement on Paralegal Education in New York State its belief in standardized educational requirements. ESAPA outlines educational guidelines and encourages their adoption by both paralegals and the attorneys who employ them. The suggested educational standards are: an associate’s degree in paralegal studies, a post-baccalaureate certificate in paralegal studies or a bachelor’s degree with a major, minor or concentration in paralegal studies.

So basically, Karen would not technically need certification but she hasn't been informally trained to be a paralegal, either. If someone had done irl what Karen did, their boss(es) would've been in deep, deep shit.

As the person below said, it depends on the state. But mostly not. I did a 1 year program and got a paralegal certificate, which can help make you stand out. But it isn't required.

Yeah, I didn't like when they shoehorned in Darcy's name on the door either. But, I suppose at least she was actually a lawyer in that one....I just didn't buy it.

I didn't know this was a thing. . . guess the fic authors I've read aren't as big on Karen as some people are.

But yeah, no, she's not a lawyer, her name doesn't go on the sign. Logic.
