Fandom Friends

(Anonymous) 2017-06-12 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm 24, and I have a turning-18-next-month fandom friend. We've known each other through Tumblr for 3 years. At first I felt bad for writing her explicit fanfic prompts, but I also remember being 15-17 and reading really dirty fic written by adults too. I guess what I'm asking is, what's the cutoff? Obviously, I wouldn't befriend a 15 year old now that I'm 24, but was it wrong to do so at 21? How do you decide how much policing you do, if at all? I don't want to come across as a creep. (I'm female, if that helps.)

Not a lot tbh. I'm not quick to offer friendship or follow people but i'm also not writing explicit stuff. If no one posts their age, idrc.

This is why you never learn the age of anyone on the Internet.

Yeah, I miss those days when we all kept quiet about our ages >_>

I remember when every forum, round robin, noticeboard, and email listing had a "I am over 18 and will be banned if I lie about this" warning banner or button on its TOS. It never stopped me joining them underage, but at least we learned to be circumspect and not obnoxious.

Well, clearly you're just trash.

OK, not really, but I do find it a little sketch to write smut and give it to underage people all "I wrote this for you!" even at 21. I mean sure, if they have a prompt that inspires you, write it and post it, but I wouldn't direct them to it. Because sure, I was reading explicit stuff as an early/mid-teen, too. So I know what that's like, but I was also perfectly capable of finding it on my own.

That said, I flat-out don't let age get in the way of having fandom friends. Squeeing about canon, sharing non-smut stories and ideas, etc., with teens doesn't bother me it all. But keep the sex out of it until their adults.

There is nothing wrong with inter generational friendships per se (in fact before our pedohunt obsessed times it was almost normal), but I do think that certain subjects need to be approached with caution and sensitivity. I guess where the line is drawn is going to depend on the people involved.

OP

Yeah, I definitely took it as a learning experience. Now I either don't ask for someone's age or, if it's listed and they're under 17, I will block, unfollow, and/or refuse to write fic for them or talk about certain subjects.

The cutoff for me would be that I'd still write explicit fics, but I wouldn't write them specifically for an underage person. I'd feel fine about posting stuff to AO3 even knowing that a minor might read it (despite warnings on the site) but I'm not going to fill an explicit prompt for a minor.

For me? I will draw and write explicit fic and tag it appropriately and put it behind cuts.

I don't give a flying fuck wether minors read or view them.

But I will not go out of my way to draw or write them porn.

I think I would have a "If you're going to ask me for smut, you have to tell me you're 18." policy. Even though obviously you're not going to ask for proof.

Like how if I go buy alcohol, come home, an under 21 friend comes over and has a drink, the store doesn't care. But if I announce to the store clerk that I'm buying alcohol for a minor, or attempt to hand it over in front of them, then they will refuse to sell to me.
