I feel the same way about relationships... There are canon relationships that I do love, but whenever I feel like the creator wants me to just immediately be on board with it because they love it, it's such a turn-off. I think sometimes an author won't necessarily put the necessary *work* into making an audience fall in love with their own favorite because they're blinded by their own emotions. Because they already love a character (or couple) so much, they feel like it should be obvious why that thing is lovable, instead of taking the trouble to show the audience what is lovable about them. It's at least the vibe I often get with author's pets. That 'X is so awesome and will show up all the time to be COOL', but without enough solid reason for someone who doesn't know every single in and out to feel the same way.
