Yeahhhhh. I mean, I think the appropriate level for setting expectations in terms of quality is to think of it as like an episode from seasons 7 through 9 that you haven't seen before. It's just the reality of the thing.

I do think it's overall pretty harmless, though. It's nice for more X-Files to exist, even bad X-Files.

This. I'm not going to get my hopes up that the new season will be as good as classic X-Files, but maybe there'll be one or two interesting new episodes. I hope they don't rely too heavily on the mythology arc, though. More standalone episodes would be great.

Any episode where Chris Carter tries to be deep is going to be bad.

TBH they should probably just ease off the conspiracy stuff altogether. That whole thing has changed so much since the 90s. Emphasize the weird and deemphasize the conspiracy. That's the route to passable/interesting new X-Files.

I agree. Unfortunately, Carter seems really invested in the conspiracy and mythology storylines. IMO, they were the weakest part of the original run, especially since it was clear Carter didn't plan ahead and the plot git hopelessly tangled.

While it was certainly tone deaf on the subject of trans* issues, I actually enjoyed the bulk of Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster. I think it was an essential piece of camp, much like many of the original episodes were drenched in camp, and it provided a much better way to reconnect Mulder with the X-Files in this day and age of entrenched cynicism and the lack of magic or room for magic left in this world. Certainly a lot better than the 9/11 truther guy.

There were a lot of things to like about it, but it's not really even close to being in the same ballpark as, like, Humbug. Or even a good solid early X-Files episode.

nayrt

Agreed. I could see glimpses of the okd Darin Morgan episodes, but it was nowhere near as good as his earlier work. Definitely a pale imitation, IMO.

I don't think it was even that bad about the trans issue. It wasn't great, but it was hardly the hate crime some people made it out to be.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-14 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't a good episode, but it had some good parts and some good ideas which is more than I can say for the rest of the season.

oh boo hoo hoo, a twans person wasn't depicted as a ~FLAWLESS GODDESS~ or w/e.

0/10 Too OTT. Dial it back a bit and you'll be more likely to get a bite on your hook.

It was a flaming garbage pile but, like, the least flaming garbage pile of the season? The new season will be terrible but let's be honest, I'm still gonna hate-watch it.

excuse u, "mulder and scully meet the were-monster" is a masterpiece.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-14 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
I loved every bit of the tenth season except that it wasn't long enough. I don't get the hate. At all.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-14 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't say I hate them but they just aren't very good at doing the things that I want X-Files episodes to do

I'm glad that they're your jam though! What do you like about them?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-14 11:00 am (UTC)(link)
There were really only three, maybe three and a half episodes that grabbed me. The Were-Monster one, the finale episode, and the Mulder trips shrooms while we meet Mulder and Scully Jr. episode. The half mark goes to the one with the urban ghost, but it was let down by the wangst over Scully's mother dying. That was my reading of the season.
