I guess the advice is that OP should do the same, but it sounds like the jerks might not actually make them laugh.

Yeah, I was going to say "Maybe stop caring about people being jerks and look for fun stuff" but then I realised how badly that left me open for criticism, so I opted to do, as you say, and imply that maybe they might like to copy me, rather than just me telling them straight out what to do.
