Book club - July poll CLOSED, announcements and planning

[personal profile] diet_poison 2017-06-15 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
July poll closed!

It looks like we will be reading Ring of Bright Water by Gavin Maxwell for July.

For June, don't forget we are reading Joust by Mercedes Lackey. What discussion date would be preferable? I am more than happy to do Sunday, July 2, as the closest Sunday to the end of the month; I don't know if many F!Sers live in the US and have plans for July 4th weekend. I could also do it the previous Sunday, which I believe would be a week from this coming Sunday, if everyone thinks they will have the book read by then (I will; I'm almost done) but it's rather early. I cannot unfortunately do Sunday the 9th. I will be at a concert that night.

Does the 2nd work for all/most people, or do you have another preference? Please let me know.

One other order of business: I've had multiple requests to change reccing procedures somewhat now that recs have become very popular. There are a few options:

-limit the number of recs per person to one
-ban re-recs (not indefinitely, but give books a one- or two-month cooldown period if they lose a poll. We've done this in the past, and it's worked well)
-limit the number of recs accepted per day (I'm not super inclined to do this since I know people can come back and comment on the post whenever they'd like, but I can definitely try to have at least one weekday and at least one weekend day open during recs if that makes a difference?)
-change the number of books accepted per month

Please let me know in the comments if you would like to try one or more of these things next month.

I will try to put up a few more posts about this in the coming week, including one this weekend.

Happy reading!

Didn't read the thread yesterday so I'm not sure what the exact concerns were that were brought up.

I would say, one, do a month without re-nomination, and two, try to have at least one weekend and one weekday. And maybe do a gap day in between recs? You could always just say that the rec posts are going to be closed once the next day's secrets go up if you needed to limit the time.

I like having two recs available from people, and I think adding more books to the poll would make it more complicated.

I'd definitely support the return of the three month cool down period for losing recs.

And limiting it to one rec per person seems fair. If you have three books you want to rec, then you've got three months worth of recs and no worries about having to repost them.

I'd like to return to the one person one vote system too though, I don't feel the check boxes are working out.

Would you mind expanding on what you prefer about having one vote, or what problems you see currently with multi-vote?

I personally strongly prefer checkbox but I'm interested to hear what you think

I think it has become a tool for voting some recs down rather than voting up the one you want to read. It is spammy and obnoxious, and I think the radial button led to clearer results.

Hmm. I still prefer being able to vote for multiple things but fair enough.

Radial button?

(I also strongly prefer checkbox voting after a few months of trying it especially as I feel the results are generally much closer. But I can also see what others think of it)

Radial buttons are what the other option you used before switching to checkboxes are called.

I've never even heard that phrase before. I just thought it was "single vote"

We never had three months - I think it was just two at the most. But I will definitely consider that as a lot of people seem to be in favor.

Huh. I felt sure the Zeus thing was going to take it. I guess I got to order a different book from Amazon now.

I'm also not around July 2nd, but otherwise I'm good with any other day you choose.

ah, darn. Are you good on weekdays? How would you feel about a weekday repost after the 2nd? (just tossing out ideas for the moment)

Generally, yes I'm good on weekdays, but since it's the 4th of July, I have off that Monday and Tuesday so I'm going to Niagara Falls for the weekend. No idea what kind of internet I'll have.

I just put it on request at the library, so I'll try to read it.

The 2nd is fine by me! And I enjoyed the book.
