Have you ever tried to make timelines for these damn series???

Oh, gods, no. Just the blatant contradictions are enough to dissuade me from trying to go deeper.

Add in now many series have 'alternate universes' baked into the premise (Abaranger, Go-Onger, Go-Busters, Zyuohger, just the ones I can remember either watching or reading about), and the idea that the contradictions should be ignored to wrap them into one universe becomes very strange to me.

And...yeah, the crossovers are fun...just have to not try to reconcile them with the main series.

So many blatant contradictions...

I mean, if people want to ignore contradictions and view it as a single shared universe, fine, that's okay, I'm not going to tell someone else how to enjoy their media. I'm more than happy to listen to people talk about why they think said contradictions should be ignored; it's fun to talk to people with enthusiasm. It's when fans start insisting their viewpoint is the only one that I get twitchy. (On that same note, I will tell you how many plot holes are in Decade. I will not tell you not to like Decade. I will not tell you you should have the same opinions I do on its myriad goddamn plotholes that make it a massive pile of wasted potential why do you do this to me, Kamen Rider.)

But yeah, I think I'd agree that multiverse is the way to go. Particularly, like you say, when you consider all the series with other dimensions baked into the premise. (Were there other ones? I'd have to go look.) I'm 90% sure you could probably assume the summer movies are usually in the same universe as the series they belong to, unless explicitly stated otherwise (555, I'm looking at you), but every once in a while those don't mesh too well either.

Got a favorite crossover?

Mmm...my favourite is, ironically, one that involves a non-sentai series I'm otherwise unfamiliar with - Gokaiger vs Space Sheriff Gavan. It's just a fun movie, in general, and the meta gag regarding Kenji Ohba's various characters in the two franchises tickled me, even without having seen him in the roles earlier.

Ha, that'll bring you way back to the 80s if you want to catch up on that one. :D (Something else I've not seen, both the crossover and Gavan the original series. And Gavan the new movie. Although I did see the Super Hero Taisen with Gavan, which involved a lot of people being very cranky and which you could probably watch without knowing much about the Kamen Rider involved, and of course the Go-Busters episodes.)

Meta gags are fun, when they're done well. (Hurricanger's Shurikenger - a character consisting ENTIRELY of meta gags and character homages. "I am ninja of ninja," pfffffffffffft. Fun, though.)

The meta gag in GvsG was Ohba appearing as all three of his characters - Gavan, Battle Kenya, and Denzi Blue - which caused everyone a lot of confusion (including them - they acknowledged that they looked awful similar, unusually for these gags).

It was supposed to be 'one last transformation' for each of them...but, obviously, assuming SHT isn't in yet another universe, it kind of turned out to not be.

To be fair, I'm more or less sure Ohba didn't do any sort of transformation in the SHT (the new guy got to be Gavain). I could be wrong.

That's a super cute meta gag, though, as far as those go. "Hey, you look familiar...." :D

I actually meant for Battle Kenya and Denzi Blue...but I just realized I was conflating SHT with 199 Hero Great Battle, which came earlier. >_<

(I do need to grab 199, at some point, too.)

I mean, there are a metric ton of crossovers and - yeah, mixing up which one is which is ridiculously easy.

Speaking of bizarre crossovers, have you seen the Korean Kyoryuger sequel? Because it is a hell of a thing. (Though between that and a few other things, I think I've found my next new language, yay.)

I've heard of it, but I haven't seen it yet - I don't like following ongoing stuff in languages I don't speak, since the translations have a tendency to stop dead - but once there's a complete translation (probably within the next month), I'ma be all over that.

It's entertaining. :D (That's also a very reasonable rule. I wouldn't want to start something I didn't know if I could finish either.)

Yeah, it looks fun, and Kyoryuger is my favourite, so I'm looking forward to it.

And that rule is a hard learned lesson from any number of anime and manga I've followed where the translator just fell off the face of the earth.

I mean, I have sympathy for "Oh, shit, I can't do this after all," but I strongly feel that it's important to finish what you start. Also fun: When the creator decides they're done with the work before the story is actually over. (CLAMP, I'm looking at you. Hard.)
