Book club - announcements and planning

[personal profile] diet_poison 2017-06-17 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey all,

I made a post the other day about some planning we needed to do - two items of business.

First, what date would you like to discuss the book club book for June? I can easily do Sunday, July 2, but already at least one person won't be available then because of the 4th of July weekend. I cannot unfortunately do Sunday the 9th. Is there any preference between doing the 2nd or doing a weekday, or bumping it up really early to the last Sunday in June (which would be a week from tomorrow)?

Secondly, I'm thinking of making some changes to reccing procedures. Things that are on the table:
-limiting recs to one per person
-initiating a one- or two-month cooldown period for losing recs
-changing the actual poll (checkbox vs. single-voting)

Please leave me your feedback! Here is a link to some discussion we've already had on these topics.

Also, don't forget - we are reading Joust by Mercedes Lackey for June, and we voted for Ring of Bright Water by Gavin Maxwell for July.

I'm in full support of this, but I think three months is better. It is easier to think in quarterly terms. If a book fails then it needs bumped to the next quarter.

I agree about limiting the recs to a cooldown period, especially since we've decided to limit the recs to only 15 (which is really more than enough)

I should be good for weekdays and if we vote to do it in a week, let me know so I can bump it up further on my to read list (I have the book, but the pile is 5 books deep)

I haven't heard much yet except "the 2nd is good" :/ Nobody has really responded about the 25th. But I think it might be hard to do it that early. I want to make sure people have the chance to finish it.

If the 2nd is good for everyone else, I'll just reply to your comments later in the week (maybe the 4th/5th) when I get back, if that's cool with you.

I'm cool with it, I'm just glad you put so much effort into this, considering how many people complain about little things.

Ok, if you are sure. I hope the timing works out better next time. And I'll be happy to talk about the book with you when you get back!

Not participating this month, I'm still getting over my dragon trauma, so no comment on the date. But I will be back for the otters next month.

- pro one rec per person (That should really give everyone and their maiden aunt a chance to nominate something.)

- pro cooldown periods (I don't really care how long those should be, since I never re-nominate anyway, but 3 month should probably be the upper limit.)

- pro checkbox voting (I liked it better than the single-vote version.)

Maybe we should do themed months every now and again. Or ban certain themes (fantasy >.>).

We get it, you hate dragons and are desperate to get someone to vote for whatever piece of crap you keep shilling.

Themed months is a cool idea, but would be another thing to keep track of. I guess I could just take suggestions for the themes and pick one. I wouldn't want to pick one on my own.

I do feel like instilling themes and banning genres will drive people away, though.
