under what rock have you been hiding lo this many a past year that you are unaware that we've been reclaiming "queer"

(Anonymous) 2017-06-18 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
go ahead and reclaim it for yourself, but don't force it on the entire fucking lgbt community. that's not how reclaiming a slur works, jfc.

silly me, thinking that every damn lgbt space I have EVER been in this past several years using it and the majority of lgbt people I've met using it would be any kind of an indication that the term was being reclaimed by anyone but me. you need to get out more, especially among the younger generations.

lots of people reclaiming it still doesn't mean you should be using a slur to refer to an entire community

I'm goad you're comfortable with it, many people are not. forcing them into a slur as a shorthand for lgbt isn't cool

well, since almost the entire community, apart from apparently like 2 anons here, has been enthusiastically embracing it publicly for quite a bit of time (again, I don't know what rock you've been hiding under, but it's evident you have been hiding under one), then I'm going to go ahead and assume that the rest of the community (including moi) is in fact pretty cool with the term, and is not clutching their severely outdated pearls about it

DA I'm cool with it and also baffled at these rock dwelling anons. Homophobes tend to call us homosexual or homos, not queer. The only people I've heard use the word queer in years is other gay people.

NAYRT-- Yeah, I see/hear it used it a non-negative general sort of way all the time. So much so, that I tend to forget that it was used in a derogatory way at all.

It sucks that people are still being hurt by it. Though, I think the F word tends to be more harmful than 'gay' or 'queer'. But that's just my experience.

Also, how does one reclaim a word if they can never use it?

you CAN use it, for YOURSELF

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2017-06-18 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
I know that there are some people who don't like it, but most people my age (40s) or younger either actively embrace it or don't use it but don't mind if other people do.

No one is forcing people to use it. They were saying we shouldn't use it to refer to ourselves since apparently like 1% of the lgbt community takes offense to it.

Re: da

there's no need to be condescending to the significant portion (no, it's not 1% in the least) of the LGBT community who do not want to be referred to as a violent slur.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-21 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
this is incredibly selfish and cruel.
