No, I don't admit to that part, because nobody online seems to know what a furry is. Furry =/= furfag =/= yiffy =/= zoophile. There's a huge progression from one to the other, and NONE of them automatically believe they ARE animals rly so I don't know where that idea comes from (not addressed to you really, I just saw someone else say it- maybe some furries DO think that, but that's not the default). Furry is just liking characters that are anthros. Furfag is liking porn of them, yiffy is being turned on by them and wanting sex in costumes, etc, and zoophilia is wanting to have sex with actual animals. There are degrees of seperation, and furry =/= batshit insane. (The fursuits are a bit weird to me, but I just think of them as cosplay- why the hell not, right?)

Example: I'd be a furry, because I love characters like Basil of Baker Street and Baron Humbert von Gikkingen. And maybe a "furfag" (except that I'm not like "LOL FURRY PORN," I just... ship characters no matter what their genders/ages/species, as long as they aren't ACTUAL ANIMALS, and I don't really give a flying flip about the rating, though I do tend to default toward the lower ratings with non-humanoid non-humans). I'm not interested in animal characters sexually, I don't want sex in a fursuit, I don't want to pretend I'm an animal, and I certainly don't want sex with real animals or want to be one. But I would still be considered a furry.

But I do get what you're trying to say with the last bit. It's not that you HAVE to be batshit to be a furry, but yeah, that sort of thing WILL attract crazies and it shouldn't be a surprise. But then, I've seen everything attract crazies. To use your Hellsing analogy, it's not that you have to be a Nazi sympathizer to be a Hellsing fan, but ~~IT HELPS! k-kidding~~ it also shouldn't really be a surprise to find Nazi sympathizers in the fandom. Or batshit crazy people who think they RLY ARE VAMPIRES IRL RLY.

For the Hellsing analogy, I wasn't saying that everyone who watches the show is a nazi sympathizer- just that you shouldn't be shocked when you find one, given the context.

I know what a furry is - I've dealt with several first-hand in real life and have come to the conclusion that the last thing to be surprised about, ESPECIALLY in that fandom, is the sheer quantity of batshit crazy and general dickery. {And let's not forget that a bunch of cosplayers are batshit crazy too}

Furries who believe that they are RLY RLY & 4 TROO animals are partially furry, partially otherkin (which is a whole other can of worms/crazy)- and liking an anthropomorphic character such as Basil from the Disney movie or Robin Hood from the same franchise doesn't make you a furry. If it did, both of my little sisters would be furries and they aren't {and hopefully, they never will be}. You probably aren't a furry because {and I'm ASSUMING} you don't have a fursona that you identify with and you don't rp with other furries using said fursona and you have probably yet to make and attach a 'tail' {ie: old socks taped together and painted a weird color} to the back of your jeans.

Yes, I'm biased against furries for real life reasons - when a stove burns you every time you touch it, you learn to stay the fuck away from the stove- you know?

TL;DR? - You're not a furry for liking Basil of Baker Street, if you made a chart with every single furry's sanity level on it, roughly 3 out of 5 of them would be batshit crazy and otherkin and cosplayers are generally just as bad.

Ah, I do get that part- I was trying to say I agreed with that bit, but I think my phrasing was super awkward? Sorry for the confusion there. But yeah, I do get that. People... need to be less surprised by what they find through the Interwebs in general. ;;

ashufajajsf I guess furry's come to mean something TOTALLY DIFFERENT online but the only real definition I've ever heard is that a "furry" is, plain and simple, someone who's a fan of anthropomorphic animals- so I didn't think you had to have a fursona or anything like that to be a furry, just to be a... further degree of furry? I don't know.

I agree that a lot of cosplayers are batshit, but then, I think a lot of people in fandom, period, are batshit, so. XD;;

Otherkin... makes me freaked. And yeah, the rest of what you're saying... the only definition for "furry" I've ever heard is the simple cut-and-dry definition of being a fan of "furry" characters, so I'm sorry for the crossed wires there. I guess that's why I'm so WTF at all the reactions of "OMG EW NO A FURRY," because I... have an entirely different definition than most people. ;;

I can get behind an automatic wariness of the type of thing that's been harmful/disturbing to you before, definitely. And I wouldn't be surprised if the 3-out-of-5 statistic was true (and not just for furries either, but some of the more crazy fandoms out there as well), and otherkin are. Yeah. Just special. (Can't really say anything about the cosplayers, though, as long as it's just cosplaying. XD;)

I don't think being a fan of movies with anthro animals in it constitutes 'being a furry'- it's only if you have a fursona / believe you are an animal 'trapped in a human's body' and that kind of thing.

The 3 out of 5 statistic probably holds true for a lot of things, at least. XD

People are probably OMG EW NO A FURRY because of the "furverts" and the general batshit insanity that comes with most furries- if I could hazard a guess.
