Zoe Quinn broke up with her boyfriend. Said whiny manbaby wrote up something like 18 pages calling her a slut and claiming she had sex with video game journalists for good reviews, even though none of the people he claimed she was fucking had ever actually reviewed her game.

He got banned from several gaming forums for it before 4chan let him keep it up and organize trolls to dox and harass her. They decided that in order to give their trolling campagne some legitimacy, to put forth the claim they weren't just harassing a woman for the lulz, they were angry that women were controlling the video game review industry with the vaginal skills and so obviously all video game reviewers were basing their reviews on how much sex they were being paid to give those reviews. "Ethics in video game journalism."

It clusterfucked outwards from there

Thanks for the link, nonny! It's a lot to look through, but obv gamergate was a lot going on.

I know a lot of gamergate was crazy levels of sexism. That side of it sadly hasn't dissipated much. I still see lots of conspiracies about companies like Bioware (all the women in Andromeda are too ugly to fuck!! It's the SJWs ruining the industry!!1!) But I also have seen plenty of level-headed non-sexist people say they're anti- anti-GG. So... obv there's more to the story I've been missing.

Like most clusterfucks there were plenty of dicks on both sides acting inappropriately. And there are people who try to insist that while it may have started out sexist and awful the idea of transparency in video game review isn't a bad one. But most people I know hold that along the same lines as flying the Confederate flag and insisting you're only using it as pride in being Southern and of course slavery (if it existed at all and wasn't made up conspiracy-style by the North after the fact) would be wrong.

Yeah, I think any good they might have been promoting was, at least to outside perspectives, lost under the tidal wave of misogyny.

But, I worked with the Obama campaign in the South, and if that taught me anything it was that individual people are way less bigoted and awful than you might think looking at their supposed politics. Many of the people I talked to were the sort to proudly fly a confederate flag or talk about the evils of socialism like they were deathly afraid of the Red Army rolling into their neighborhood. But most of these same people were also thrilled to talk to a gay Russian gang banger democrat about how they thought it was a shame that the US didn't have universal healthcare.

So, I'm very hesitant to say the people in some group are "just" racist or sexist or whatever. And confirmation bias works on both sides of the equation, too. The people on the inside of movements like GG see their opponents ignoring their good points and insulting their way of life. The people on the outside ignore the good points and focus on the sexism and harassment.

But all that aside, who the fuck cares about the reasons when both the movement and the anti-movement turn into doxxing and harassment campaigns. The whole thing is a stain on gaming culture that we're still struggling to recover from.

Well, one GG advocate explained the idea of transparency in a video game review as "just the features." Which I'll point out, is exactly what EA bullied PC World into delivering, reviews that listed every Ikea object in an expansion pack without comment.
