It's not a good thing to do to cats, because it can cause severe pain, especially later in life. It's unnatural, and in most cases totally unnecessary - a responsible pet owner should be ready to trim their pet's nails, they even make claw covers for cats.

On the other hand, lots of people are just ignorant about why it's bad just precisely because it's so common. from a pragmatic standpoint, I'd rather a cat be adopted from a shelter and have a good home more than anything, and if a family insists that they only want a declawed cat due to their precious new furniture, fine.
