As someone who was a young kid when the POTC franchise started, he was pretty big in those years, and after the first one, I stopped understanding the love for him.

Not to mention, he keeps being cast in things, so clearly casting directors still like him, despite the diminishing returns.

I think Johnny wants to fuck Tim, but I think Tim envisions himself as Johnny, like Tim looking at Johnny sees a funhouse mirror, preferable version of himself.

At least, that's what I assume, considering how often he'd pair Johnny up with his then-partner Helena.

If he were universally poison, you wouldn't see him starring in big blockbuster movies, like the next installment of the PotC franchise. When big movies no longer cast him, THAT'S when you know that a significant majority of people no longer like him. Until then, all the dislike is a vocal minority. The rest of the movie-going world doesn't care enough.
