Huh. That sucks, and I understand why it would put you off. It's not the impression I got from the original comic, and it's definitely not the impression I get from the reboot. I do know that the comic changed a lot from the original concept, and that the character going from a woman to a trans man was part of that, so I hope that the last bit was just a matter of character evolution.
