There was a time when 60s stuff was all over 80s and some of 90s television (and there were so many fewer channels), so it was easy to have caught things like Batman without even trying. (It took me some time to appreciate what they were doing with that show as I was pretty young when I first saw it and didn't really understand tongue-in-cheek, but then, at some point, I just got it.) I feel like now, you'd really have to seek it out. And though it was a defining role and it informed other roles of his, I don't think it's necessary for the enjoyment of his other performances. But if you get the chance, it is silly and campy and funny.
