Fungus

(Anonymous) 2017-06-20 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a fungus - one of those ruffly-looking ones - growing on a stump outside my window. I keep looking at it and feeling creeped out.

Some fungus just really bugs me. Those ruffly ones that grow on stumps and logs. Any mold on food. Anything slimy.

The umbrella shaped kind of mushrooms don't bother me if they're growing on the ground or on a log, but on anything else, they suddenly creep me out.

I don't know why fungus bugs me so much. I think my feelings toward it are similar to how a lot of people feel about bugs and spiders (which don't bother me much). I used to have nightmares about fungus.

I heard it's because fungus resembles scabs and skin infections, and in some people that triggers a primal instinct to be repulsed by it. Don't know if that's scientifically proven to be true, but it makes sense to me.

I like that fungus that looks like a vagina as a...fungus egg and then a penis when it fully forms.

We have these weird penis mushrooms in my yard. My mom takes pictures of them and sends them to me.

Mold on food is nasty, and slimy fungus is nasty. But I think the ruffly ones are really pretty.

The big ass dry ball ones are also kinda gross.

We get chicken of the woods growing on carob trees around here, which is a big yellow shelf fungus like hen of the woods. Apparently more people have reactions to them on the US west coast than elsewhere, but I'd guess it's because their other host out here is eucalyptus, and they're full up of toxins.

I'm on the East Coast, and we had one of those in my yard. Some guy who knows about mushrooms knocked on our door to ask my mom if he could have it. I'd have just let him take the whole nasty looking thing, but when my mom found out it was edible, she had to try it. I was NOT happy to open the fridge and see half of that thing on a plate. D:

AYRT--I actually think they're kind of pretty, sorry! I just don't like the texture of mushrooms, although if they're pureed or chopped really finely I don't mind the taste. And I don't think I could wild gather them because I'd be afraid of poisoning myself, even if it was something like chicken of the woods, which is hard to mistake for other things.

I think my problem is the "not a plant, not an animal, feeds on dead organic material" bit. I honestly find eathing mushrooms kind of repulsive.

Well, here's a squick I didn't have until reading this thread. Thanks.

Let me tell you about the most disgusting fungus of all:
Picture, if you can (i hope you can't) the smell of rotting corpses in the sun.
Now imagine a garden smelling like that because of some shitty fungus. It grows over night, attracts loads of flies, and if the fuckhead of a neighbour that infested your garden with it doesn't care about killing them you have no chance of them ever going away.

It's great fun. I hope the guy dies and rots - not that I'd smell it over those fucking stinkhorns.

The creepy thing aboit fungus: a mushroom on a stump is just the fruit of the fungus. The fungus itself is all around *inside* the stump, its web of tendrils penetrating into every corner...
