...Clearly, we really do share each other's misery! While I'd prefer that people gather their tumblr prompt fic into a collection I can easily scroll past, I still get irrationally annoyed when I see multiple collections in a page of search results. Especially when it's one with 100+ chapters and a word count of 20,000 or something. And I hate, hate, HATE having to click through pages and pages and PAGES of someone uploading their entire library of "Drabble challenge" fic responses from their LJ days to AO3 all in the same night. Especially when they're barely tagged and have no summaries!

Oh my GOD, the Reader/Character thing just...breaks my brain. I DO NOT GET IT. I mean, I like to think I have a reasonably good imagination, but I just do not understand the appeal of that sort of thing. Or how I could even project myself onto "Reader", "Y/N", or whatever cutesy term appears in the fic. Reader is so obviously NOT the actual reader so...how?? And WHY?? Even taking into account the increased prevalence of video games and how they encourage a player to participate in the experience of the game (though that's a pretty nifty theory, and does offer an interesting reason - thank you for sharing!), I still don't understand why someone would ever want to write something like that, much less why anyone would want to read it. YKINMKATOK and all, I won't scream abuse at the people who do indulge in it, but MAN, I just do NOT get it.

Video games are great! Though even there, I tend to stick to RPGs. I do better with immersive stories. (Countless hours of level grinding notwithstanding.)

It's aaaaaaaaaaaaall annoying, the drabble collections and challenges. I feel better now, though, so thank you for the sympathy.

And I mean, no, I pass no judgment on the authors or the readers of XReader fic, you do what makes you happy, that's totally fine. But I can stand here and go WTF without being a judgmental prick (which I think we're doing quite well). But yeah. No. Just. No. If I want to read about a fandom, then I want to read about the characters in a fandom. If I want to imagine myself banging a character, I don't want someone else writing a fic for that... I. Yeah. Unfathomable. I'm glad you like the theory, though.

I also think video games are great, but I don't play them at all. Once in a blue moon I get bored and play Angry Birds, but I don't think that counts. But yeah, I mean, they have the potential for a different type of storytelling than has been the norm since film and television were introduced. I can't really speak as to the participatory nature of stage performances, for example, before the advent of film, but. I appreciate how it's a differently immersive experience, and people should enjoy that.

Reader is so obviously NOT the actual reader so...how??

Yeah, that's the part that gets to me the most about that type of fic. Either the "reader" character has to be left so vague to where anyone reading can see themselves in that role, which makes it harder for me to really engage with the story and the interaction between the "reader" and the character in question (I don't exactly need to read a fic to fantasize about myself getting all romantic with a character I'm crushing on, after all), or they've got just enough detail for the "reader" to where it's harder for some readers to enjoy it, since they don't quite fit the description of the "reader" character.

And if the writer's already creating some descriptive qualities for this reader character, why not just go all the way and make a proper OC? I know that OC fic gets dumped on a lot, too, which can be equally as sucky and frustrating for a writer, but still, at least you're practicing how to create your own characters, which is a worthwhile skill.

Like you and others have said here, if people want to write and read that kind of fic, fine, more power to 'em. I can just scroll past it. But I do understand and sympathize with the issues people have with that kind of fic, yeah.

OP

I've seen an uptick in fics like that and the Y/N thing always makes me think it's asking yes or no like an rp fic or something. :|
