I always thought it was beautiful.

I always got the impression that she only vaguely remembers it, but not clearly, as if it were a dream.

I like this interpretation - it mostly goes with Word Of God but feels like all the events that happened had an impact, instead of being totally forgotten.

She forgets everything? D: Well now I'm more sad.

But yeah, I re-watched it recently as well and I agree that the ending is absolutely lovely. The entire movie holds amazingly well, too.

You are reminding me that I really need to rewatch this movie.
Also that is some really gorgeous fanart.

The ending used to make me feel sad too, OP, but I do think it's beautiful now. I also think she vaguely remembers it, but as a dream.

Wait, she forgets everything? To be fair, that's not really expressed in the film, is it?

I imagine they'll realize something is up when loads of time has passed since they left the car, possibly years...

No it isn't. Thankfully, in my opinion.

Mostly because I've always hated the message that one must let go of childhood dreams and fantasies to keep growing up. I'm legally an adult and take care of all my adult responsibilities. That doesn't preclude my love of creativity and dreaming (which I express through writing).

In addition, the thought that she would forget all about the friends she made during her journey just rubs me the wrong way. So I fail to see how an ending where she forgets or only vaguely remembers everything can be beautiful.

But to each their own.

I always figured that she forgot everything once she got out, it's the idea that made the most sense to me even if I did think that was a bummer.

Still love this movie though, the animation is gorgeous and I love the story and characters, it's probably my most-watched Ghibli movie.

Wait really??
What's the whole purpose of her going on that insane magical journey if she doesn't even remember or grow from it?
;(

to be blunt she doesn't seem to change much, even the dialogue with her parents at the end is exactly the same.
