The movies were TERRIBLE on that front, yeah. It probably colored the thinking of some people, even if they'd read the books first and knew that it's not really accurate.

Definitely. Not just for this. I sometimes lurk when I see HP-related discussions and so many times I see movie scenes stated as fact from the books. I hate it so much but even if you try to correct them there's just no end to it.

Still beats using headcanon as fact.
