People hate Dorian/Cullen? Are they Dorian/Bull shippers and Inquisitor/Cullen shippers?

Mind you, I have a strong fondness for Fenders too, and while I can see why people would not be fond of it (Anders is polarising, Fenris has strong beliefs) I... just don't see why people put the energy into hating over shipping.

Nah, not afaik. I've seen a lot of people who ship both adoribull and cullrian.

Mostly it seems to come from the "Cullen is Worse Than Corypheus" crowd. There's a pretty strong subgroup of DA fandom antis that loathe Cullen (and to a lesser extent Alistair) for being a handsome blond man with a problematic past. These people think that Cullen is, like, the biggest villain of DA2 or something, and that he's even worse in DAI bc the game doesn't repeatedly beat you over the head with the fact that Cullen did some bad shit in his past. And any relationship that pairs Cullen with a mage is Bad.

It's also Bad that Varric seems to like Cullen, bc Varric was around when Cullen was doing bad shit and Varric is never friends with any bad people. /s

Oh crap. See this is why I avoid Tumblr - I have even stopped reading the DA Confessions blog. Cullen had a bad period but saw the reality of his own side. He even had good reason why he had the bad period.

Personally I ship him with a version of Solona Amell who was sent to Orlais and ended up in Fiona's following (my Warden is a Surana, Solona has two siblings, one dead, one Surana recruits circa 9:37, also the Inquisitor is a Silmarillion OC).

I think Cullen is a great story for someone who went quite a way towards the mage-hating side and then came back from it, especially in a Mage Inquisitor romance.

Yeah, I don't see a whole lot of the negativity on tumblr, but that's just bc I've been very careful about who I follow in the DA fandom. I've followed other people in the past that were much more involved in the, uh, social side of things rather than just reblogging nice art and holy crap is it bad.

Cullen is imo one of the most interesting characters in the series in that we get to actually see the full journey throughout the series. Everyone else, we see snapshots of it. But Cullen goes from being a young naive kid to a tortured victim lashing out in DAO. And then we see him in DA2 still clearly trying to reconcile his experiences and justified fear with his strong sense of morality. And then in DAI he's finally reached that point of reconciliation and healing.

I think in some ways that makes him harder for the black-and-white thinking anti sort of crowd to swallow. Fenris and Shale never reach that place of resolution, we only ever see them as victims or survivors so their hatred of mages is somehow justified because they're hurting. It's okay for Fenris to be an ass to every mage including the healer who lives like a hobo in the sewers, bc Anders is just like Tevinter aristocracy.

But Cullen gets over the hurting stage and becomes a nicer and more just person, and gets off lyrium, and becomes bffs with a Tevinter Magister necromancer. He gets a happy ending even though he used to be a bad person and there's nothing that the anti crowd hates more than that.

I'm gonna disagree with you on Cullen being interesting. At least in DAI. He was interesting in DAO and DA2, but in DAI he got screwed over by bad writing, making his story nonsensical. There's essentially three different Cullens in DAI.

There's the Redeemed Cullen, who is sorry for his past actions and thoughts, who wants to treat mages better and who befriends mages. Then there's the Antimage Cullen, who gets angry every time the Inquisitor makes pro-mage decisions, who makes discriminating comments against the mages without ever apologising and who'd risk the entire world just to avoid teaming up with mages. And finally there's the Retconned Cullen, who never had anything against mages to begin with, who didn't let his trauma affect him in any way and who's always been all for mage rights.

Whichever one you get depends on the current scene and that, for me, makes him hard to like. He has no personality, he's whatever the writers need him to be at the moment. When they need someone to counter a pro-mage argument, he's the Antimage, when they want to get the Inquisitor to sympathise with him, he's the Redeemed, when they need to make a point that not all Templars are evil, he's the Retconned.

I guess when people like or dislike him, it depends on which one of him comes out to them the strongest.

Don't forget the Cullenwives who can't accept their straight darling being touched by the icky gay (instead of their F!Lavellan or F!Trevelyan).
