A colleague introduced me to a great essay "On Bullshit" (unfortunately I don't have a link to an online version), which I think neatly explains the phenomena of how social justice concerns get twisted in the service of what is basically online harassment. As long as outspoken truthiness gets you likes and reblogs from a group supporting your bullshit, and there are no real consequences, people will game the system for attention.
