Well...technically they DID finally do LGBT anime right. Hence why no BL anime has managed to make a dent in general sales and yet YOI is literally making history left and right.

Fujoshi didn't do that. It being a damn good anime with great characters and animation and themes did that.

I have a collection of people who very thoroughly point out the considerable problems YOI has with storytelling, characterization and thematic consistency, but I don't expect it'd change your mind ("great animation", right).

See, I don't particularly like YoI and I have my own issues with parts of it. But you are aware that it's common practise for anime series to air a not too greatly animated version and include the better animated version on the DVD/Bluray as a buying incentive, right?

I knew that fixing animation blunders on the BD/DVD release was common, but not that it was used as a sales tactic, no. From what I recall, Free! at least was consistently well animated as it aired, but I have the impression that that is a Kyoani staple.

It's basically one of the main selling points because BD/DVD are incredibly expensive in Japan. That and, as you mentioned, most anime are produced with time and budget pressure, so it's both a matter of "let's fix these mistakes afterwards" and "let's see if it's even popular enough to spend a lot or not quite so much money on fixing this first".

That makes sense. But in the discussion on YOI and the "great animation", I can't take people seriously when they act as if the skating routine in episode 1 was at all representative of the visual quality of the rest of the show.

TBH, I thought it was a real shame not only that the animation was kinda wonky a lot of times, but how they reused the same few wonky frames over and over again (especially Yurio looked downright weird and kinda like a rubbeband in his routines). And yeah, I agree than in general, watch-as-it-aired-YoI was not the flawless animation experience a lot of people like to think it was.

So you're comparing the animation quality of one work based on a novel, done by a famous studio; with one original work no one expected to succeed done by a small studio?

I didn't expect great animation out of YOI and I didn't get it either. What I was *not* expecting was for people to keep telling me and all their friends how AMAZING it was, when it was patently average with a few cringeworthy moments.

People exaggerate when they love (or hate) something, news at 11.

I, at least, also saw many people pointing that well animated parts were very good and that for the rest we could hope for something better when the DVDs/BRs were out instead of making claims of perfection.
