OK so if you're convinced this is just fujoshi stuff, how come it's done so phenomenally, shutting out FUCKING LOVE LIVE in sales (otaku are a MUCH more viable block than fujoshi), to become the #4 best-selling anime of all time?

Even the best-selling actual BL animes, Junjou Romantica and Sekai-ichi Hatsukoi, haven't done a tenth as well as this, and those had manga sales to boost their popularity.

4th best selling post 2000 anime, get your facts straight. You're also conveniently ignoring that number one and two are blatant otakubait. Bakemonogatari (number 1) is literally a harem anime with lolis and incest and the whole shebang. Late night anime panders to otaku and all the sub cultures that go with it.

Nothing's ever gonna top NGE though.

Yeeeeeeah I'm not expert or anything, but when Madoka Magica is on that list and FMA isn't, it's pretty obvious that disc slaes =/= general popularity.

Long series selling well are an exception, not the rule, because anime DVD/BR are too expensive.

FMA had two anime series, one that went the original ending route and another that stick to the manga but rushed the first part of the story; and it's well known that these kind of adaptations are more to boost manga sales (cheaper, more likely to proof how popular something is) than for their own sake.

It'd have been a surprise if either versions had good sales.

Fujomatsu sold 1k less than YOI, your argument is invalid.

And I forgot to add Gundam SEED, another anime with a massive fujoshi following that of course like any Gundam also had shit ton of guys buying it, but mostly girls, a fact that was a huge problem to Sunrise because girls don't buy Gunpla.
