The game is set in a post apocalyptic future where sentient machines wiped out most of humanity, and centuries later the earth has reclaimed the cities, humanity has reverted to hunter-gatherers, and the machines have evolved to resemble animals like cougar and deer. That particular machine is a Tallneck, a communications drone that resembles a giant giraffe. You can climb it to access area maps, which is one of the more majestic parts of the game.
