Carry On was better than Harry Potter but not as good as The Magicians.

I hated The Magicians so much. Quentin was awful.

By the end of Book 3, Quentin has had the most realistically and painfully slow growing up/genuinely excellent character development I've maybe ever seen, but my god was it painful to sit through for the first two tomes.

I really liked Carry On, but it was sorta weird to read a fictional character's fanfic turned into a novel. Like, I recognized some fanfic conventions and it was so strange to find those in a real life book. I never got into Harry Potter (much to my best friend's dismay), so I can'y say if it was better or not. The ending was kinda stupid though.

It makes me sad to see people say things like "ugh, fanfic turned into a book? so weird" when I thought the way she did it was so clever and intentional. But I was familiar with the exact era of HP fanfic she was referencing, so I imagine it would be a bit different if you knew fanfic but not that specific fandom.

Well, it wasn't weird in a bad way. It just felt weird because I'd never encountered fanfic conventions in a book before, but once I got past that, I really appreciated what she did with it.

I love Carry On, but the Magicians was one of the worst books I've ever read.

I don't care to read Carry On just because I never really cared much for HP in general. So learning that it's basically HP fanfic with the characters' names changed? Yeah, no thanks.

I really loved Carry On. Obviously I should try the Magicians!

...But Harry Potter is a million times better than The Magicians?
