I had my first psychiatrist appointment yesterday.

And I'm not entirely sure about her just yet? I've been diagnosed with ADHD since I was ten, and I finally managed to get the ball rolling on getting my depression treated. She put me on a mood stabilizer to try first, and didn't write me any kind of prescription for any kind of ADHD medication. Now, my symptoms do kind of fit bipolar. Except that all of the "up" bipolar symptoms I have are also most definitely ADHD symptoms as well.

So I'm not sure yet if what I have is a psych who's wisely covering all the bases to make sure I'm getting the right treatment, or one who's not listening to what I say.

It's important for you to feel comfortable and like your clinician is listening to you. On the other hand, provided she's a good psychiatrist who knows her stuff, her professional opinion is what you should defer to for now. Just the same as if you went to a medical doctor, generally you should trust that they are seeing your symptoms differently than perhaps you do, and have more merit for diagnosing and treating them.

Not that psychiatrists can't be wrong, but as long as you feel comfortable talking with her and that she does listen to what you have to say, it's worth putting your trust in her at least for a couple sessions. She might be right.

A family member of mine went through the same thing, and it turned out he was both bipolar and ADHD when only the latter had been diagnosed. I can't talk for you. But it did turn out for him that they were able to catch the bipolar because he was put on the mood stabilizers and they worked.

I'd suggest you bring your concerns to her. You can also ask questions, like how long it will take to show if the mood stabilizer is working, what to do if it doesn't work, etc.

Also, there is a fair amount of overlap/comorbidity between the conditions.
