I have no theory, unless it's, "I think people sometimes like a thing, then later realize they no longer like it for various reasons". Not very exciting, but much more realistic than yours, IMO.

that leaves out the part where that line of thinking leads to them passionately jumping on every discussion about him to tell everyone how disgusting he is.

no one is arguing that people can't like him, dumbo
