thread OP: I would not compare him to Tolkien at all. Admittedly, I didn't read the book all the way through but the only commonality to Tolkien is an ability to describe scenery. His characters are flat and lack personality, so unlike LOTR you don't get sucked in right away by likeable hobbits and fascinating rogues in bars. I say this as I've read LOTR/Sil so many times I can't read them anymore because there's no more surprises.

Ah. Well, I'll give one of his books a try anyway. We'll see if I like it or not. But I'm always looking for new fantasy to try.

You really should try his book called Tigana.
It's about an accursed kingdom. It's citizens can't even breathe it's name. Really beautiful in its thematic scope.

...and yes, I'm a touch biased - it's one of my favorites.
