I think a lot of people are diminishing the fact that sleep apnea played a part too.

https://twitter.com/ReporterClaudia/status/875874852279734272

Obviously the drugs didn't help but many people aren't aware of how dangerous sleep apnea can be.

Good point. My dad had sleep apnea, and that definitely added to the stress of his health issues.

She had a medicine cabinet in her tox screen. Multiple prescription psychiatric drugs plus a bunch of street drugs too. It's a shame. She lived a hard life and paid the price. But the OP is right. A joke this is not.

A lot of things about the reaction towards celebrity death annoy me. Like I dunno, a lot of people treat it as punchline, make dumb jokes about the roles they played instead of the person themselves, a lot of memorials/reporting seem like they're more interest in how it'll the person making it not the dead, making fanart seems in more poor taste.

I know people grieve in their own way, but they're all grieving wrong I tell you!

The SW fandom that I've seen have been very protective of her. They are on board with what her daughter said about it being an illness and it not diminishing her in any way. I haven't seen any haters, just lots of support.

All I saw was a flood of love for Carrie and reminders that she was frank and open about her struggles with addiction.

I don't know about the SW fandom, but I agree that most of the comments I've seen around the internet are what you describe.

Do you think Carrie Fisher was low on drug money for years. Then got episode VII and got a big check and used that on drugs?

Did Star Wars kill Carrie Fisher?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-25 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
No. She hasn't been "low on money" period, because she's had an active and interesting career outside of Star Wars all this time.

If anything it really seems possible to me that dealing with the renewed pressures of that kind of celebrity did contribute :(

(Anonymous) 2017-06-25 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I doubt it was directly the case, but who knows. Carrie Fisher was back in the spotlight in the role she was most beloved for, and she said herself how difficult it was for an older woman to get roles. Before she died, I had thought she must be really happy. But I guess life is more complicated than that - or maybe the drugs had something to do with the happiness.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-26 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
No.

She had several illnesses (addiction, bipolar disorder). She was a writer and script doctor, and had a lot of different projects outside of Star Wars.

Sometimes illnesses have complications. She died of hers, sadly.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-25 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Like... it's not like she wasn't pretty open about her drug abuse. I'm not sure why people expected anything else.

People should gradually learn that respect for the dead is somehow necessary. Unfortunately there are many otherwise normal folks that process grief in a fashion that is superficially contrary to this exact notion.

Ms. Fischer's death was tragic. Addiction is, too. Our reactions to both shouldn't be.

ugh, autocorrect...

...Ms. Fisher.

Sorry.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-25 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
One of the things I wish would be brought up more, that she was found to have "extensive skeletal degenerative arthritis and spondylosis." Which means she was likely in pretty awful chronic pain, which could have helped contribute to her relapse.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-25 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
i don't know much about her but from what i've seen since her death i was under the impression that carrie fisher would be on board with people making jokes about it, so maybe that's why people might rely on punchlines to react to it?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-26 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
+1, she made plenty of jokes about it herself, so as long as people aren't saying, "ew, that junkie deserved it" or something, I think she's appreciate the black humour involved in joking about her death. Her daughter seems to think so, and released the autopsy results to the public because she felt that it wasn't shameful for Carrie to have drugs in her system.

This is one of those instances I'm glad my circle is small, which means I haven't run into any of these reactions. Instead I've seen some really great supportive and thought provoking people standing up for her and essentially feeling like you've expressed in the secret. I'll see if I could remember any links and send them your way if you like.
